I am not saying his stories are pure garbage but why would Webster's Dictionary make up a definition as a conspiracy toward all Virginia Tech fans because their mascot is a Hokie, just doesn't make sense to me.

At one time dork, I suppose, wasn't a "word". But I'd bet it's definition is in there. And honestly, for several years, VT played like castrated turkeys. I remember the 2-3 wins a year and if you won 5-6 that was an outstanding season. And if it was a WINNING season? PARTY TIME! Even if the definition came after the cheer, it still sticks w/my theme of "unintentionally intentional" irony. If the word was universally defined as "castrated turkey", even if it was a made-up word, who's to say it wasn't a frustrated VPI fan that started using Hokie as the word for a castrated turkey since the program couldn't win more than 2-3 games a year for a long time? You guys might be needing to blame one of your own, sounds like to me, not conjecturing that Webster's Dictionary has a conspiracy against VT as some do.

The story about the cheer is true--granted. But the term "Hokie" wasn't adopted as the mascot until Fightin Gobblers was done away with by Beamer, I believe. Either that or it was the prior coach. So--it's extremely possible the definition may have come during the downtimes, which were pre-Beamer, but they still took the mascot "Hokie"...and at that point in time it's actual definition wouldn't have been "a word in a cheer", it would have been "castrated male turkey".

You believe what you want and I'll believe what I want because it's been stated by plenty of VT people that "no one knows for 100% sure" what a Hokie is.

I doubt UT went to the medical dictionary to find their mascot's name. Nice stretch though. I'm the last one to defend UT...but that's just outta left-field and ridiculous. At least Hokie's definition is up in the air...

Besides, at least UT's mascot is based in a type of person that can be back-tracked into history, with volunteer soldiers coming to war w/their own guns from Tennessee. We can actually go back and find out what one is--not say "it came from a cheer".
